The beautiful-hipped Menakā then timidly entered the hermitage and saw Viśvāmitrā, who had burnt all his sins through austerities, but was still engaged in austerities.

Having paid her homage to the riṣi, she began to play around before him. At that instant, the wind robbed her of her garments, which were as white as the moon.

The supreme among sages saw Menakā grasp at her garment. He saw her nude and that she was beautiful, with no marks of age on her body.
ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ ने मेनका को उसके वस्त्र को पकड़ते हुए देखा। उसने उसे नग्न देखा और पाया कि वह सुंदर थी, उसके शरीर पर उम्र का कोई निशान नहीं था।

On seeing her beauty and qualities, the bull among Brāhmana-s was struck with desire and wished to unite with her.

He invited her and the unblemished one accepted his invitation. The two of them then passed a long time in the wood, making love as they wished. It seemed to be but a single day.

Through the sage, Śākuntala was born to Menakā. Menakā went to the banks of the Mālinī, which passed through a lovely plain in the Himālaya-s.
ऋषि के माध्यम से मेनका से शकुंतला का जन्म हुआ। मेनका मालिनी के तट पर गईं, जो हिमालय के एक सुंदर मैदान से होकर गुजरती थी।
Having given birth, Menakā left the child on the banks of the Mālinī and left. Her objective accomplished, she quickly returned to Śākra's assembly.
जन्म देने के बाद मेनका बच्चे को मालिनी के तट पर छोड़कर चली गई। उसका उद्देश्य पूरा हो गया, वह शीघ्र ही शक्र की सभा में लौट आई।
The daughter lay in a deserted forest frequented by carnivorous lions and tigers. On seeing this, vultures surrounded her from all sides, so as to protect her.
बेटी एक निर्जन जंगल में पड़ी थी जहाँ अक्सर मांसाहारी शेर और बाघ रहते थे। यह देखकर उसकी रक्षा के लिए गिद्धों ने उसे चारों ओर से घेर लिया।
I saw her in the deep and lonely wood, surrounded by birds. I took her home and brought her up as my own daughter.
मैंने उसे गहरे और एकांत जंगल में, पक्षियों से घिरा हुआ देखा। मैं उसे अपने घर ले आई और अपनी बेटी की तरह उसका पालन-पोषण किया।
According to the sacred texts, there are three kinds of fathers. In proper order, they are the one who gives a body, the one who protects and the one who provides food.

Because she was found in the solitude of the forest, surrounded by birds, I have given her the name of Śākuntala.

O amiable one! Know that it is thus that Śākuntala became my daughter. The unblemished Śākuntala also thinks of me as her father."
हे मिलनसार! जान लो कि इस प्रकार शकुन्तला मेरी पुत्री हुई। निष्कलंक शकुंतला भी मुझे अपना पिता मानती है।"
When asked, this is how the maharṣi described the account of my birth. O ruler of men! I do not know my own.
पूछने पर महर्षि ने मेरे जन्म का वृतांत इस प्रकार बताया। हे मनुष्यों के शासक! मुझे अपना नहीं पता.

कण्वं हि पितरं मन्ये पितरं स्वमजानती इति ते कथितं राजन्यथावृत्तं श्रुतं मया
But this is how I think of Kaṇva as my father. O king! I have told you exactly as I heard it.
लेकिन इस तरह मैं कण्व को अपने पिता के रूप में सोचता हूं। हे राजा! मैंने जैसा सुना था, वैसा ही तुम्हें बता दिया है।
